Heavy gaskets are usually gotten into place by starting a section, spreading the gasket to go over the part it locks to, and then taking a smooth, small tool and hooking it under the adjacent section, pushing with the other hand so that it gradually goes into place. what comes to mind is the way that the rotating iron on the tire machine forces the bead over the rim while that little steel finger controls it from going too far. You need to find a suitable small tool that won't rip the gasket. The bent handle of a small spoon, perhaps, to hook under and gradually force it on going around.
This the sort of thing a shrewd technician won't let you watch, for fear they will no longer be needed when you learn the trick.
