Ultimate Driving Test Routes

In Southern California, Los Angeles region, this road will test just about everything on your car and then some: Mulholland Dr. from Woodland Hills to the ocean. It's about a 25 mile route of nearly stopsign free traveling along incredible scenery, smooth turns and decent straightaways, plus hair raising brake and clutch challenging steep grades, narrowed roadway and sharp turns next to steep canyon walls. I'd heard about it from other drivers over the years, but didn't try it until yesterday. I couldn't have picked a hotter day too, being somewhere above the 100 mark for most of the drive. Along the more level parts I was able to use the AC to keep things cool inside, but had to shut it off once the slower speeds and steep grades began. Along one stretch of uphill driving in low gear I watched as the temp guage pushed as high as I've ever seen it go on this car - 225. I was half expecting to see steam or hear the sound of a popped coolant hose. I guess I should learn to trust the coolant to keep from boiling, which it did. The real test would have been to go back the same way, but I chose the ocean scenic route through Malibu. I look forward to that drive again, but will choose a cooler time to do so.
