Mainly, Mobil 1 0W-40 is rated ACEA A3, which is recommended for your SAAB. It also meets GM/SAAB/Opel LL-A-025 "long life" spec, which means it can be used in the 9-3SS with the flexible service interval. M1 5W-30 doesn't meet either of these specs.

M1 (all grades) is made from more expensive real synthetic base stocks (Group IV and V) versus Shell Rotella T Synthetic, which is made from Group III highly hydrocracked petroleum basestocks. Group III costs less to produce and Mobil actually sued Castrol over this (most Castrol Syntec is Group III), but the courts decided that Group III oils perform well enough to be called synthetic.

Having said that, Shell's Group III synthetic is supposed to be good stuff, and some claim it's better than other Group IIIs out there. Rotella T Synthetic has a heavy-duty additive package, suitable for diesel engines. But it is also rated API SL for gasoline engines. It does not have formal ACEA A3 approval, but looks like it would pass--it's HTHS is greater than 4 (ACEA A3 spec says HTHS must be greater than 3.5), and is said to be suitable for long drain intervals.

Delvac 1 5W-40, like Rotella T, is also a "fleet diesel oil", but is a real synthetic, not a Group III. It also carries the API SL rating for gasoline engines. It doesn't have a formal ACEA A3 rating, but would probably meet that spec, with an HTHS of 4.1. It's also said to be very shear stable, more so than M1 0W-40. Dean really liked this stuff in his old SAAB. Only problem with this stuff is that it's hard to find.

Confused? :-)

Ultimately, the best way to know which particular oil is best for your car under your conditions using your drain interval is by oil analysis.

Starting with an oil which meets all the required specs (eg, M1 0W-40) is a good place to start.
