I think this concern is pretty valid. The timing chain tensioner and guides won't work properly if the engine spins the wrong way. It's possible nothing would happen, but it's also possible the timing chain could lose tension and get caught up somewhere or a valve could hit a piston. The car would have to move a pretty good distance for this to happen, though, and I suspect if it did you'd have bigger things to worry about... :)

FWIW, I have to leave my '86 900S in gear because it has no parking brake (Wilwood calipers). It hasn't been a problem, though I do choose to leave it in 1st or Reverse based on likely sources of impact.
