OT: Another cell phone question

Can you keep your phone number when switching providers?
I'm with AT&T and have a Nokia 8260. Horrible. Not sure whether it's the phone or the system, but even with the best reception I can't get onto a cell in the car, I get dropped all the time and the quality of the connection is usually so bad that I can't check voicemail because the connection cuts out for a fractions of a second. Others who have AT&T report similar dropping problems, although not as severe as what I'm going through now. My cell phone is basically useless.
I'm thinking about switching over but I do not want to change my phone number. Is this possible?
