A note...
There are such emulators for standard ODB-II functionality. See, for example, http://www.scantool.net/software.htm
For data logging, checking and clearing CELs, this is a decent solution. What we need now is for someone to port the PCMCIA card information to this platform. That way, the cost of purchase is now $75 hardware + $300 PCMCIA card. Scott could rent that to people at $30/use, let's say, and make it all up in 12 uses, with lower risk. I'd be much more willing to pay $30 than $100, too.
So, we need a good hacker (meant only in the best way) in the community to do this for us. Let's say, using the source code for the software at ScanTools.net to write a new version that can read the PCMCIA card to add functionality. The interfacing is already written.
Then, I install the software on my laptop, and I rent the PCMCIA card and the hardware. Connect both to the laptop, connect to the car, and I have a working Tech-II.
I'm sure Scott/Saabnet could get away with buying the software updates only every year or less. A friendly dealer or indie could let us know when the update is major and worth getting.
Volunteers?
Matt
