Off TSN for a few weeks: Bye Bye Cleveland! Off to SF Posted by Randy Thatcher [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
My move to the Bay Area is a reality now. All I own is on a 53' trailer. A Volvo Tractor is pulling it (very nice inside, btw). It's a bit weird to be sitting in an empty house with an air matress, 2 weeks of clothes, a laptop, and a DSL setup.
Well the 1990 SPG (120k today) is ready: new cap/rotor, belts, plugs, tires, brakes, rt rear caliper, fresh oil & filter, CB radio, radar, and MP3 player in the dash. Tstat, coolant, brake fluid, and O2 sensor was done about a year ago, so they should be good. I have many hours of Audio books, a killer mix CD of MP3's and some other CD's. I have a bucket in the trunk with the following: water, oil, brake fluid, steering fluid, coolant. I have a ton of tools, too. Plus there's a bag with old belts, hoses, plugs, AMM, and AIC. We also have some softsided SAAB coolers from the SOC'02. They'll keep the Mt. Dew cold!
I got a book on what's left of Rt 66 and a book called something like "Roadside America". We also have a new Rand McNally atlas, all the AAA books and maps from here to there, and the TSN mechanic's from here to there (let's hope that stays stashed away).
So, based on my prelimiary reading of the "Roadside America", here's the plan:
See family in Dayton, OH
See family in Denver, CO
See family in LA, CA
Visit the largest ball of twine in the world (Cawker City, KS)
See the geodetic center of the lower 48, somewhere close to the twine
IIRC, there are about 3 other things not far from the twine. All at the same exit.
Eat at Noah's Ark Restaurant in St. Charles, MO
See the largest Ketchup bottle somewhere near St. Louis
Drive the devil's highway somewhere near the 4 corners (if it's still Rt. 666) I'll need a picture of me, the black SPG, and that roadsign.
See the big hole in the ground, otherwise called the Grand Canyon
Stay at Wigwam Village in Arizona (stayed at the Mammoth Cave one a few years back)
If you can name any other zany things to see or do before I am internet deprived (monday morning is my last email for a while), let me know. My friends and family are going to get a great bunch of pcitures in the Christmas letter this year!
I'm going I-70 until Utah, then breaking south to AZ, to the Grand Canyon, then I-40/Rt66 remnants out to LA, then north to Emeryville. That LA to Emeryville run is going to be a fast cruise back to reality as I prep myself to unpack 90000 boxes of junk.
