The 850 wagon is much different from the 940/740 or 240 series. It is front wheel drive, so it drives and handles differently. Also, I find the ride of the 850 to be very harsh (very tight... you feel every crack and bump in the road). The ride on the 940/740 is 'friendlier', yet you are in complete control (like in a Saab). I'd say the 850's ride is much like the ride of a 9000, the 940/740's ride is more like a 9-5's.
The 850 engine is a 5 cylinder that is very reliable and will go for many 100K miles. If it is a turbo, it will also be very fast. But in the turbo 850, you will need a doctor to readjust your spine every month (feels like it has *no* shocks).
The interior and body of the 850 will hold up just as well as the 940/740. It doesn't rust.
The only problem area I've heard of in the 850 is the electrical system.
So basically, it is a good reliable car, with some weak spots and a ride that the driver must feel comfortable with.
