is it too late for Synthetic oil??

I own a 1990 900s with 130k miles. I (TRY) to change the oil and filter every 3500 or so and Im using valvoline 10w30. I want to use some kind of syntheitc oil but im not sure if its safe for my engine. I heard things can happen like seals start leaking and a host of other bullcrap that can happen by switching to snythetic. I just want to go 10k without changing, that would be very convenient. so, If i use SEMI synthetic will that not have the same leaking effect as full snythetic? will it work better with my old worn engine and seals instead of full synthetic? Do you have to flush out your motor a few times before swtiching to semi OR synthetic? argh, pretty confusing.
so my quistions are :)
1. Does synthetic oil cause leaks when switching to it.
2. If I use SEMI synthetic, would it NOT cause the leaks?
3. Do you have to FLUSH the motor out before switching to synthetic?
4. Do you recommend I switch?
5. Larger oil filter are good to use, what LARGER oil filter can I pick up at my local autozone parts store? Im using purolator PUREONE. What size could I use instead of the stadnard?
This would really help me out. Thanks :)
