A few months ago with my wife. We also went up to Cancun. We never felt any place was dangerous. Cancun is very overdeveloped and full of tourists. Every single time we ate somewhere or got gas or whatever, the vendors attempted to short change us. I was annoyed, but my wife just accepted it as part of the experience and they always gave us our full change although sometimes it took two or three times to get it all... They try to give you lots of little change because it's annoying to have to count it all and they're hoping you won't...
The pros were that outside of Cancun, it was cheap living! Pina coladas and beer and food were so inexpensive. We had a good time. The water was warm, but snorkeling wasn't that great. Big waves in Cancun, hardly any waves in Playa del Carmen. The Mayan ruins were fabulous.
