Are there more numbers you're using to make this claim, though? The fact that 9-3 sales are up 289% and total sales are up only 17% doesn't necessarily mean they're cannibalizing 9-5 sales. Look at these hypothetical numbers:
2002 sales
9-3: 10
9-5: 100
2003 sales
9-3: 30
9-5: 100
9-3 sales tripled, total sales went up ~18%, and 9-5 sales remained the same. I have no idea if the 9-5 outsold the hatchback, but the shift from 9-5 to 9-3 might not be as drastic as your 300% vs 17% makes it sound.
And it's entirely expected - if you were a Saab fan and wanted a sedan, you had one choice. Now you have two, one slightly larger, the other more modern. That's why the line-up is expanding before Saab simply improves the 9-5. Adding a small hatchback or SUV brings a wave of totally new customers in. Redesigning the 9-5 primarily serves to attract people from the 9-3 upwards a bit.
Just some more rambling for the discussion...
