...you will over time have more deposits in your engine than if you used only top-shelf gasolines. "Rot-gut" gasolines (including Arco, Costco, Safeway, independants, etc) will absolutely give you measurably higher deposits than Chevron (which is my personal favorite here in California).
- Intake valve deposits can cause start-up difficulties (and higher emmissions), power loss, and hesitation. Engine design trend is to go with lighter valve springs to reduce rotational resistance, making valve sticking a building concern causing major start-up problems in cool/cold weather due to lost compression (valve doesn't close all the way).
- Fuel injector deposits (which auto manufacturers are seeing more warranty claims on as vehicles become more fuel efficient and higher performance) can cause driveability problems, power loss, higher emissions, and lower economy.
- Combustion chamber deposits can reduce power (engine compensates for premature ignition by retarding timing), increase emissions, and result in "octane creep" (your car needs higher octane gasoline to run its best).
Additionally, independant-brand gasolines are often (but not always) manufactured at "merchant" refiners who have little financial motivation to produce better specification gasoline (called "drivability index" by autos) than the majors.
The upside to using cheap-o gasoline is that its usually cheaper than my Chevron ($0.20 per gallon difference here in the SF Bay Area). However, I'm driving a brand new '03 9-5, and IMHO its worth the extra latte' per fill-up to avoid engine deposits. But that's just me...
