You'll often see the big rigs using partial grill covers in the winter. Though it has more to do with the radiator and the trucks' massive cooling systems than with just cold air blowing over the engine, as I understand it. The coolant in the raditor is so cold that once the thermostat open the engine is filled with cold coolant causing the thermostat to shut once again. The capacity of the truck cooling system is such that the coolant may take a very long time to, or never, heat up to operating temperature under full airflow. I imagine the same principle can apply to cars and light trucks as well, though with their much smaller cooling system the impact is far less. It would be interesting to see a quantitative test done on this.
