Downtown/Gaslamp can be a lot of fun for just walking around, bar hopping, eating, etc.

Pacific Beach has a lot of good bars, etc. Younger crowd (lived there in my 20s, would feel old there now in my late 30s :) )

La Jolla is great if you want to spend money, and spend a lot of time parking. Worth at least seeing. La Jolla shores, just north, is a good beach, and I'd recommend a (chain, but high end chain) restaurant there called Piatti (get reservations for a table on the patio -- it's beautiful).

Coronado is also worth seeing. If you're free at breakfast time some time, go to the Night and Day cafe -- it's colossal portions of greasy diner breakfast food and fun. Unfortunately most of the restaurants in Coronado (in my opinion) are oriented towards a tourist crowd and NOT repeat business , so they just aren't that good.

Things to see if you've got free day time: Balboa Park is pretty. Point Loma, Cabrillo monument has a spectacular view of downtown and the ocean. La Jolla and up by UCSD is very pretty during the day -- check out Salk Institute (probably the most famous architecture in town) and the hang gliderport up on the hill by UCSD).

Someone also mentioned Hillcrest, and you can get a good meal up there. Lots of bars too (just so you know, the gay/lesbian bar scene is in Hillcrest, so you might not be meeting any young ladies in the bars there :) )

In the Hillcrest area, try dessert at Karen Krasny's (I may have misspelled it) -- it's a dessert-only joint that is just awesome.

Feel free to email if you know what part of town you are staying in and want restaurant recommendations. Unfortunately, I'm embarrassingly out of date on the bar recommendations, but some of the ones already mentioned are definitely good places...
