I was in the Myan Rivieria last December with my wife.
I would STRONGLY suggested paying with cash whenever possible.We went to Sr. Frogs (tourist trap) over on Cozumal for lunch and the greasey waiter somehow copied the magnetic strip on our CC. He charged over 1,000 worth of woman's shoes on it. Thankfully or cc company (MBNA)didn't hold us responsible for the charges. I am told this is pretty common in the area.

Good day trips:
-Ferry to Cozumal out of Playa del Carmen, good for haggeling prices (always start at 50% of the asking price or lower and when you can't settle on a price just turn your back on them and head to the next shop)
-Telum (small Mayan Ruins)- There is a nice small beach you can swin at there as well.
