Sometimes things are paradoxical.
Grooves in road are primarily caused by tire wear from heavy trucks and traffic in general. Any heavily traveled highway develops grooves and needs periodic repaving. The constant squirm of tires rubbing on the road is worse than any friction from studs. Modern studs are cushioned by the tire rubber to minimize any damage from impact(not friction).
There is a major exception. Intersections and driveways get damaged by studs when wheels skid or spin. IMO, this damage is a worthwhile trade-off for accident reduction and not getting stuck in general. Driveway damage is, of course, cosmetic.
