I was there 5 years ago and unfortunately I can't find my notes right now so I don't have specifics, but I'll give you some general info which will hopefully help at least just a little bit.

Trollhatten is a small town but we were able to find a cheap but very cute "pension" room with a private bathroom that I think was only about $40 total for the 2 of us. We just walked around the town a bit and stumbled upon the place. As far as activities, I don't remember there being much, we did have a good inexpensive dinner, but I was certainly content to have a quiet evening after spending all day being awestruck at the Saab Museum and then just walking around town feeling like I was in heaven...the only place I've ever been where Saabs were the most common vehicle--very cool--for me at least, but I'm a huge Saab geek, your mileage may vary.

Goteborg (as the Swedes call it IIRC) was definitely a much bigger, "hipper" town with a lot of studnets so it had plenty of activities and accommodation options, so you should have no problem finding fun and a cheap bed with a good guide book or just even walking around.
