I first used a Palm OS device (Palm Zire, Sony Clie, Handspring Visor), but found that I wanted greater capability inside of one month of use. Pocket Pcs (PPC) integrate more seamlessly with your desktop applications like Word, Excel, Power Point, and Money to name a few and the illuminated color display definitely makes viewing much easier. The PPC also gives more options for text entry (I still use the graffiti based entry that I learned using my Palm OS device). You will find that Palm OS devices are much more efficient when it comes to power consumption. I have to charge my iPAQ once a day during heavy use.
There are many PPC options available in your target price range. I personally prefer the HP iPAQ line, but the Toshiba's aren't bad either. I'd stay away from the NEC. See the Link to Tigerdirect.com below.
