Why is the engine out? How much will it cost to put it back in? What were the symptoms/problems? Where & when did you have the oil change done? What kind of oil did you use? What did the old oil look like? What kind of warranty's on the car?
Obviously, 4k miles wouldn't sludge an engine (unless it was a turbo engine using obsolete API SA-rated oil (available at WalMart & many other places) ... ), so if you bought the car with a warranty I'd fight for it.
If you're stuck & have to take care of this yourself, spend $60 & get the three-bottle-special of Auto-Rx (link below). At only 2% of the cost of a new engine (including all the oil & filters it takes to run it thru), it's the most cost-effective first step. Run it with Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 & replace your filter (& top up the oil & A-Rx) every 500 miles for the all three 1500 mile applications. After that, run only ACEA A3-rated fully synthetic PAO oils like Mobil 1 15W-50 or 0W-40 (or Amsoil equivalents).
