and you don't have to tear into your dash or anything just plug it into your tape deck of course. And, of course any casette tape adaptor that you could plug into a portable cd player will work--not just the one Apple sells--if you want to save a few bucks and look for it a local hardware/electronics etc. shop.
I can appreciate your concerns about the loss in sonic quality as I am a huge music fan. And as mentioned below there it is unfortunate that there is some loss when using a tape adaptor but it is not too bad...one thing that helps me is I use a "custom" higher quality setting on the sound quality when I import songs from CDs--I'm not sure if this will help you on internet downloads though. Although these higher quality custom settings do cause each song file to be about a third bigger which in turn lowers the number of songs that a certain iPod can hold. Therefore, I would recommend going for maybe an iPod with more than 20GB of memory if it's not too much of a financial strain and if you do (or potentially will) have a lot of music you want to put on your iPod.
Lastly, just though of this, your 9-3 does have a tape player right? I'm not aware of the various configs for the different 9-3 models over the years. If not, ignore the above :-) and a radio transmitter may be the only solution without tearing into your dash.
