Midtown is generally sterile, and Times Square Area is generally touristy. I encourage you to check out some of the more colorful and uniquely NY neighborhoods. I'd go to Greenwich Village, the East Village, SOHO, or Chelsea.
The Blue Note and Village Vanguard are great jazz clubs, and there's tons of other live music there if you cannot arrange tix in advance.

Each of those neighborhoods has lots of restaurants, feel free to just stumble around, getting a drink here, a coffee there, and a meal when you happen across a good looking restaurant. Remember you can eat steak anywhere in the country, why do it in NY?
