Phil at DPReview prefers the 4MP Canons (G3, S40/45) to the 5MPs of the same body (G5, S50), speculating that the 5MP sensor (note that both use the smaller 1/2.7 sensor versus the 1/1.8 sensor in the Nikons you listed) requires more resolution than the lens can provide. He liked the respective Olympus camera better (model 5050).
The G-N and S-N Canons are more "snapshot" style, as is the Coolpix 5000, Olympus 5050 and on down, and smaller olympi. The 5400 and Minolta DiMage 7 family are more "traditional SLR" style, which you may be more comfortable using. Then there's the Sony F717, which is more unconventional in format but a very good performer. First, you need to do some shopping and see about the "look and feel" of different camera designs. THen visit dpreview.com and evaluate the feature set and image quality for cameras within that design subset. Taking away film really opens up the design possibilities - there's shirt pocket, almost credit card sized at the one end all the way up to SLR's at the other end.
How many times I've used my film camera since going digital? 4 times - three times to shoot fast-moving cars, once to shoot wild animals.
