15 degrees and snowing right now, beautiful. I'm currently living in the Burlington area, which is where most of the jobs are. I did my undergrad up here, worked in Boston for a couple years, and then hightailed it back up here to work on my doctorate. It really is a wonderful place to live, which is why I came back. It's got everything you would want and it's right in your back yard. From Burlington you are only 30'-45' from awesome skiing, hiking, mtn-biking, kayaking, climbing, you name it. There are also some really nice scenic drives.
This is a very Saab friendly town as well. Everywhere you look there are Saabs of all shapes and colors. I had no trouble finding an indy mech. after I bought my 9-3 in september.
I've only spent 2 days in Portland, so I really can't form an opinion on it. What I saw of it was pretty nice, although I don't remember seeing the sun on my short stay.
Good luck with your decision.
