Too much tire pressure--damaging?

Hey
I recently changed my summer tires/rims over to snow tires/rims at home, but I don't have compressed air at home so I drove the car around the corner to the local Mobil service station to top off the pressure. Aparently the dude working at the service station wasn't big on women using his tire filling apparatus (or maybe he was trying to be nice?!?!) so performed this service for me for free! I told him I wanted 35 PSI and he went around filling them to what he said was 40, but he said it doesn't matter, and I thought, whatever, I can go home and let some out later on.
I was about two blocks down the road when I realized something wasn't right and when I got home and checked the pressure with 2 different guages, I found that the pressures ranged anywhere from 55 to 70 PSI. Obviously I corrected the situation but might irreversible damage have been done to my snow tires? Just how annoyed should I be about this?
Thanks everyone
Annie
