Running directional tires backwards

My wife's 1996 900S has some directional all-season tires on it and I always thought they were really noisy, well much to my embarassment at not checking sooner, the rear tires had apparently been put on in the wrong direction by Discount Tire where we bought the tires. So, those tires are now on the front and going the right direction, but they are still very noisy. Did running them in the wrong direction harm them (they were going the wrong direction for around a year)?? When running backwards they were not noisy initially, but gradually became noisier. Should I go back to Discount Tires and demand new tires? I feel really stupid for not checking the direction when they became noticably noisy.
Thanks,
Joel
