Tom,
As a native Portlander, I admittedly have a bias against suburban living. But, if you're dead set on living in Beaverton, then here's a few places to look. The Murrayhill area, around Murray Road and Scholls Ferry Road has a lot of good rental units. Also, further west and to the north of Murrayhill is the area around 185th and Cornell Road. This is nearer the Nike and Intel campuses, if you happen to be working for one of those companies.
Just to back up what KR said...Beaverton is just another suburb. Boring, faceless, auto-oriented, same ol', same ol'. If you really want to experience the beauty and fun of the Portland area, live in the city. There are great neighborhoods with fun, interesting shops, restaurants, brewpubs, parks, places to walk and ride a bike, etc. all over Portland. Not so in Beaverton, or most other suburbs, for that matter. Multnomah Village, as KR stated, is wonderful. The east side is full of stately old homes built from 1900 - 1940. Look at the Mt. Tabor, Sellwood, Irvington, Rose City or Beaumont neighborhoods in particular. Portland's best elementary school is Alameda School, on NE Fremont. Rather pricey neighborhood, though. Portland's schools, like all of Oregon's, have been facing a lack of funding. But Multnomah County voters approved a modest tax increase to improve their school districts, so things are looking up a bit in that regard.
There're lots of outdoor activities--hiking, biking, skiing, the beach, etc.--either in Portland, or within 90 minutes or so of Portland. Portland has a lively arts scene, vibrant downtown, world-class restaurants, very friendly citizens, an environmentally oriented way of development, the NBA team with the most players who have probation officers, and a great transit system. If you don't mind the rain (tell Santa you need Gore-Tex for X-mas!), you'll probably love it here. Welcome.
Regards,
Dan
