Wife and I are tiriing of the nagging problems that her 99.5 VW golf seems to plauge us with. Although the engine works fine (aside from the monthly check engine light that we have to reset) the car surrounding the car is not everything we had initially hoped - lots of small things go wrong, and tonight I brouight it in for driver's window which fell down into the door for the 4th time.

I noticed recently that the 94-98 (9k's), 97-99 (900/9-3) saabs are starting to come down into our price bracket. I'm wondering if anyone has owned both and has a preference as to which is the better car. Specifically lets say that its a 80-120k mile car that I buy in cherry condition (from a notiously good central minnesota saab specialist).

My needs are as follows:
(1) we won't die in a car crash
(2) we'll be able to cruise comfortably at high speed and still get good gas mileage (the car shouldn't be a buzzy as current Golf - 70mph is somewhat noisy 3500rpm)
(3) we'll be able to haul big, bulky things back home from the Home Despot
(4) I'll be able to fix most of the mechanical problems that occur

Are there any things that cause incessant trouble? I remember hearing once that the AC compressor on the NG900 was an unreliable beast.
