Saw a wear rate graph ages ago but don't know where. It came out to something like when at half new tread depth you still have 2/3 of the tire life to go.
All to do with extra heat and squirm from the bigger blocks on new tires.
That's why when you think the tires are getting thin they seem to take forever to really get down to the wear bars.
And why autocrossers buy tires with thin treads, or have new tires ground down. And why race cars have slicks for dry racing.
