Car damage..what should I do?

I got a huge (~1 sq ft, and ~2 inches deep) dent on my driver's door :-( Some POS must have bumped into my car when maiking a U-turn or something. I wasn't at the site, and can't accuse anybody for it.
I didn't see any point of reporting to the police, but should I have or do it even now?
The paint didn't suffer too much, and it doesn't seem it'd be too hard to fix it, but I'm not sure. I have 1000 deductible for my insurance. Should I report it to the insurance? How much would it cost to fix a huge dent on the door panel?
