FWIW, my 15 yr-old daughter is a decent skier, wanted to try snowboarding. Did a couple hours of lessons and some playing around at it. At lunch she returned the rental board and she literally hugged her skis. On the same day, my 10 yr old who had previously tried and decided she couldn't stand skiing, jumped on a snowboard and loves it.
I'm a fairly advanced skier, would like to try snowboarding, but just don't want to climb the learning curve, even though I used to skateboard and still windsurf.
I think skiing is easier to learn because the ski teaching methods are pretty refined and the equipment is more responsive, even for a beginner. Snowboarding teaching seems to be a bit more free-form---sort of like the sport, but doesn't seem quite as consistent. From what riders tell me, it's harder to learn to really use the edges of the board when turning, which is where you want to get to. This is much easier on skis, assuming you are being taught the right techniques.
If you are going for a few days, try both. Do a morning lesson or two, then work at it in the afternoon. Then on the third day you can do whichever one appeals most. One will probably really "click."
Just go have fun. Both are great.
