Anybody using Vonage for phone service?

After looking at my local verizon bill, my long distance bill and ISP (non DSL) bill, I'm wondering if I should break down and get cable or at least DSL and then get Vonage, a VOIP (voice over internet protocol) phone service provider (or any other VOIP provider, I'm not advertising any one outfit).

As I understand it, I keep my verizon local number at a flat minimum charge and make all outgoing local and long distance calls through Vonage at a flat $35 per month for as many outgoing calls as I want. Right now my local & internet connection calls are showing up as $.09 per call and 33% of my long distance charges are federal and state taxes and surcharges (sneak taxes, gee thanks Mr. Gore and Pataki!) In a busy month my combined phone bill approach $200. My other option is to do what my brother does and use Costo calling cards for a flat $0.035 per minute).

I'm interested in getting some advice from users before converting, I figure that local minimum monthly service may be $25, Vonage $35 and DSL or cable $50, so for $110 all in I get high speed internet service and a cap on all phone call expense, plus I don't have to change my number. I'm not as concerned about getting cable TV, but if I can use that for internet connection and TV is thrown in too then fine. I'm interested in if the federal surcharges apply under Vonage and anyone's experience with the quality/reliability of service, etc.
