I was wondering the same thing in my Saab 9-3 while following a TDI Audi A6 at 140 MPH on the autobahn going toward Munich. Later, I drove my German neighbor's turbo diesel Renaults (Vel Satis and the Sport Lagune) and was very impressed by the torque. It reminded me of an American V8. Almost 50% of the cars sold in Europe are diesels. Now I am back in the US, and notice a look of horror whenever I mention diesels to anyone. They have visions of the mid-80s GM diesels which were bad, smelly or something like that. Hopefully some of the excellent diesels in Europe will become available here when low-sulfur diesel fuel becomes available in 2006 (if the EPA allows it). The better diesel motors available in Europe will not run very well on US diesel fuel. The newer diesels are nice in a car, and really make sense in SUVs and light duty trucks. And all without the large cloud of smoke associated with diesels. GM, Ford, Daimler-Chrysler, Toyota, and VW are very involved in developing diesels that should hit the market in the 2007 model year. Currently Ford and others are considering running diesel powerplants in cars at LeMans next year. We'll see what happens.
