Hi all,
Unfortunately, last night someone broke into my convertible and stole my aftermarket touch-screen DVD/Navigation system head unit. The jackasses didn't even have the decency to close the door when they were done, so the car got rained in all night long.
I've filed a police report, but I'm waffling on whether to bother with an insurance claim. They ripped the head unit right out of the dash, with wires hanging everywhere, but the idiots didn't take the A/V input box (which is where the radio antenna goes), and they left the navigation unit itself. The whole package was $2000 plus installation (which I did myself). I'm guessing the head unit was about $1000 of that, which is the limit of my comprehensive "Custom Parts and Equipment" coverage anyway. My deductible is $500. But, being a young male, my insurance is already ridiculously overpriced. I'm worried that claiming the loss and getting ~$500 or even less out of it won't be worth any increase in premiums.
Does anyone have any advice or experience with the effects of a comprehensive claim on insurance premiums?
At this point, I'm hesitant to even replace it, since they could just steal it again. It was parked right in front of my condo, the alarm went off (or I assume it did - when I closed and re-opened the door, it sounded again this morning), and they still had time to rip it out...
For what it's worth, their mode of entry was to pry between the front and back window on the passenger side - the weather stripping that lives on the back window is significantly deformed. Then they pulled up the lock tab and opened the door. They also took the two quarters in my change cup, but left the $1.15 in dimes and nickels...
(sigh)
Thanks for any advice...
