I was following a friend through Harlem going to the GeorgeWashington Bridge, and he took a left turn quickly through a yellow light. Because I had no idea where I was, I gunned it and went through the light as it turned red. Within a moment, lights were flashing behind me.
I pulled over and said simply "Yes, Sir, I know I went through the light improperly... I'm following my friend and don't know where I am. I'm very sorry." Got my license and registration right away. The cop was angry, but I simply answered "Yes/No Sir" to all his questions, politely admitted that I had done wrong, and he finally said "OK, but drive more carefully. Just because this is New York doesn't mean you can do anything you want". I said "yes, Sir, thank you Sir, Merry Christmas Sir", and drove off.
Politeness. Respect. They are so rare, the cops are disarmed!
