Does the 9-5 get driven later in the day? Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Bad to start car, move a few feet, then shut every morn?, Alex Athanasiou, Wed, 14 Jan 2004 07:44:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Yes it does wear out the engine and oil quicker by doing a quick start/shut down like that.
Can't really say how many miles or years you shorten the life though.
Cold starts is what wears out the engine and oil the quickest.
If this is done every day for a long time, consider having the oil changed on a more regular basis than 5000 miles, maybe every 2-3000 miles.
What happens at a cold start is that the engine is overly rich in fuel mixture. Some of that fuel finds its way past piston rings and dilutes the engine oil.
I have a 2 mile drive to my work every day and the oil is pretty bad when I changed it at every 1500-2000 miles. I can smell the extra fuel in it.
Also if the car isn't taken for a longer drive during the day you build up a lot of condensation water in exhaustsystem that will rot the system from inside out.
