If you already have experience with x/c and downhill... Posted by IrieTom [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Telemark bumper sticker....., Rod M, Wed, 21 Jan 2004 10:38:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
you should be able to pick it up rather quickly. I tried it for the first time after 15+ years of both DH and XC skiing, and had a blast!
Late '80s, Magic Mtn. (southern VT) was having telemark races and there were a bunch of equipment demo vans. I got set up with 215cm skis and stiff high-top boots. The boots/bindings were so solid that I could carve turns just like downhill gear. The snow was really nice packed powder, and everything just seemed to fall into place. I was able to keep up with a fellow college ski team buddy all over the hill- narrow steeps, moguls, etc. I even had some fun in the halfpipe (this was before skiiers and boarders started getting territorial and hostile towards each other) but had a tough time landing jumps without face-planting.
A few years later, I tried some demo telemark gear up at Sugarbush, but the skis were much shorter (190cm or so), a bit wider, and had terrible edge grip. The snow was wet granular over frozen granular, and my lack of good telemark technique was quite humbling.
I suppose lessons would be a good idea, but I'm pretty far away from investing in yet another way to slide down a hill. My ski boots and snowboard boots are completely shot, and now that I no longer work in the ski industry I've got to pay for lift tickets, too.
Oh, well- I guess I'll hop on the x/c boards this afternoon. It looks beautiful outside...
