DK about John Deere. Very possibly made by some other company to JD specs. Craftsman is probably OK (also made by a company to Sears specs)
DK where you live, but if he gets a lot of snow the auger-driven may be hard to use--not strong enough. I'd recommend one with a tranny to drive the wheels and a 2-stage blower unit. And either way, if there is a big storm, tell him to go out a coupla times. Easier on him and the machine.
You might want to read Consumer Reports. I did that when I bought my blower a few years back and it was very helpful.
He may also find maneuvering around cars to be a nuisance. I park ours in a line when it snows to make the whole job easier.
Good luck.
