Anyone done plastic welding with HF kit?

I recently bought a kit from Harbor Freight to weld a crack in my Aero's taillight cover. It is barely visible, but leaks water, which raises heck with my lights.

The kit consists of an air hose which hooks up to a compressor, a heating element which superheats the air, and welding sticks of various compositions for different kinds of plastic. The idea is that you heat the stick and the superheated air blows the melted plastic into your break for a secure repair.

I'm thinking this may not be a good tool for this job, as the sticks are opaque and the taillight lens clear. However I could see it as being an excellent way to repair the washer fluid reservoir, or perhaps even the plastic on the heater core, or the plastic end of the radiator.

Does anyone have experience with this or similar tools? What is it capable of, and how easy is it to use? How strong is the repair?

Also regarding my original problem, would a soldering iron be the best bet for repairing my lens? Thanks for your input.
