Similar thing happened to me. I bought a top of the line Pro Scan TV back in 1996. The picture started to flicker (intermittantly) about a year ago to the point where it was unwatchable. I replaced it with a nice new 27" Sony and a DVD player. I didn't want to throw away the old Pro Scan, though, and my Mom needed a new TV for the living room. After looking at it in the corner of my apartment for a year, I finally borrowed an SUV to move it out to Long Island and brought it to a repair shop. They charged me $125 to repair it. When I asked what was wrong, there was a pause and the tech said uh, the main board.
I throw away Mom's old TV and hook up the Pro Scan. It looked great for a while (this was around thanksgiving). Now, the picture flickers again although not as bad as it was and it is watchable. I was gonna bring it back to the shop again but it's too much trouble. I'll just wait till it eventually blows up and then buy her a new one.
Good luck whatever you decide. I would toss it, though.
