ever worked on a cray? There's only a small class of problems that you can see the peak speed that they're talking about. It has to be something with a really long loop of similar calculations (matrix matrix multiply, fourier transform, standard BLAS stuff) to take advantage of the vector register. The only application normal people use on a computer that I can imagine running quickly on a cray is Photoshop (image rendering operations are really matrix operations...). I assume that's why Apple does relatively well when compared to Intel in the image rendering comparisons.
I might be mistaken though, if they're using AMD chips it must be more for general use - similar to an IBM SP or an SGI origin.
