My wife drives a 99 ML430. Judging from the reputation, I guess I can say that we have been very lucky. The truck is okay. It has been relatively reliable. Window switch was replaced last year (common problem). Brake pads need replacement way more often than other cars, and they are very expensive, $149 each. On other MLs I have been told about problems with the skylight, A.C., and integrity, the back of the car rattles a lot.
The 320 engine is known for being under powered, and it has issues with head gasket. Go to mbnz.org and go to the W163 forum for more information.
The plastic panel convering the D pillars cracked, because Mercedes put a sealant that is not flexible enough. Dealer won't replace them as it is out of warranty. This truck is supposed to be able to go off-road, but just going on the freeway, body parts are cracking. Mercedes told me not to worry as they are only cosmetic. Thanks, this is our last Mercedes.
I think it is still the best looking SUV, but it has a not so good reputation. Replacement (W164) is due soon and if you go to the website mentioned above, you will see pictures of the final edition W163.
