Hey Brian,
MichaelG's assessment is spot on.
When we bought our 30" HDTV, I also bought:
Monster 6' component video cables at ~$100
Radio Shack 6' component video cables (with in-line noise suppression discretes) at ~$60
Target's GE-branded 6' A/V cables (the heavy, individually shielded composite R/W/Y ones, connected to the component R/G/B outputs) at ~$15
Radio Shack's 4' digital audio coax cable at ~$15
Monster's "basic" 6' optical digital audio cable at ~$30 (shielding doesn't matter on optical cables like it does on electrical cables)
I also tried the unshielded A/V cable (composite R/W/Y) that came free with the DVD player, & the S-video cable we had been using on the previous TV.
The results:
On our "small" 30" HDTV, there was no discernible difference between the Monster, Radio Shack, or GE video cables. There was noticeable degradation when using the unshielded free cables in the R/G/B outputs, but it was still better than the S-video cable (which was way better than either composite or coax).
As for the audio, the optical digital cable was maybe a hair better than the coax digital cable, but it was really hard to tell. We listened both to movies & music CDs, & evaluated the audio separately from the video. Basically, any digital audio connection is going to blow away the standard L/R cables nearly all CD players use.
