I'll start by assuming that your computers are both running Microsoft Windows operating systems versions 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, or XP. I'll also assume that neither of these PCs are currently networked.

Check the properties of the NIC (also known as the ethernet card, or network interface card) and make sure that it says "this device is working properly." Then right-click on "My Computer" and select "properties." Click the "network identification" tab, and select "this computer is part of a workgroup"- keep the default "workgroup" name. Then shut down the computer.

Once you have done this with both computers, you'll need to connect them with a "crossover cable." This is an ethernet cable where the "send" and "receive" wires have been swapped from end to end. Once connected, boot up your computers. On your desktop, in "my computer" or "windows explorer," find the folder with your music, right-click on it, and select "share this folder." On your laptop, look in "network neighborhood" (or "my network places") for your desktop, and you should find the shared music folder. The rest is drag-and-drop.

Disclaimer: I'm mostly familiar with Windows 98 and 2000, and do not have a workgroup to verify this advice (I'm writing this at a PC running windows 2000 advanced server.)
