You can definitely spot the Iridium Flares in LA. Just go to the web site linked below, punch in your location as best you can by picking it out of the database, and then select Iridium Flares. These are low earth orbit satellites (500 miles up vs 20,000 miles) and are extremely bright but they only last for about 10 seconds. They are often 10 times brighter than Venus which is the brightest thing in the sky besides the moon itself. I guarantee you can see them in LA and even the Space Station and Space Shuttle are as bright as Venus so you can see those too!
