although the main idea behind a 6-speed is to give a high performance car the ability to be in the higher revs quicker--make better use of the power band--and in a larger variety of speeds/gears. Therefore, the 6-speed gearing can make a car slightly faster to certain speeds.
How useful (or rather how often it is used to its fullest) is a whole 'nother debate...though the extra fuel economy is defintely a valid use...though few people buying $30K and up (and usually well over $50K) high performance cars get too worried about 5 bucks or so extra a month in gas. Especially if the 6-speed option is into the thousands of dollars extra.
And it's odd seeing it in cars that have serious low end torque that don't really need to keep the revs high to enjoy the power of the engine.
Having said all this though, possibly the main reason is that it's a good marketing/selling point. i.e., keeping up with or one-upping the other guy.
