Thailand is a wonderful country, though I am not a big fan of Bangkok itself. Some of the attractions are great (the big name stuff you'll find in a guide book) and certainly worth your time. You'll also see some pretty strange stuff, like someone guiding an elephant down a major road downtown (apparently since using elephants for labor was outlawed, there are a lot of "redundant" elephants and mahoots and some of them come to the city in hopes of earning a little money). I think that being there as a young single male I was accosted far too frequently with offers of either a criminal or sexual nature, which grew to be irritating. Some of it is quite amusing, such as negotiating your fare on a “tuk-tuk” by how many jewelry shops you stop at. Note that I was traveling on the cheap, which does tend to make things more interesting, for better or worse.
Far nicer to me were the other parts of Thailand. The flights are cheap and efficient in my experience. Chang Mai is a beautiful very laid-back city and provides the opportunity for jungle trekking, exploring on rented motorcycles, etc. You may not have time for such, but I found it to be a better place to spend time than Bangkok. You can’t go wrong with the islands down south either, especially if you are a big beach and/or party person. Lots of things to do, but not quite as unique an experience as Chang Mai in my opinion. In general the people are very friendly and engaging and put a great emphasis on hospitality. Be careful of petty crime, mostly scams of one sort or another, in Bangkok though.
I think you have a great opportunity to see a fascinating country. Even if you never leave Bangkok you’ll see some truly fascinating thinks that you won’t soon forget. HK is also quite a trip, let me know if you want some pointers there.
Have a great time,
Craig
