I'd bet that they're right. Scandisk won't necessarily report hardware problems like weak harddrive sectors or a head that reads a spot intermittently when it's cold.
I had a Dell at work that did something similar. The IT guys reformatted the harddrive a couple of times after it lost its boot sector. Trend Micro never found a virus before the crashes either. I don't know who has it now, but they better save everything on a network drive.
If they're adventurous, the IT dept may want to get a copy of Spinrite and give the HD a once over with that.
Back up everything you want to keep.
