How would you handle this....?

My wife's Exploder is in getting a new (reman) starter.
This is the second in about 45 days. ( I was away almost all of May).
The guys at the shop, who are generally competent and trustworthy, have this afternoon gone thru 4 other starters, none of which properly engage the flywheel. They also say the flywheel is OK, everything else checks out.
Now they have burned some time on this, and are now thinking the car actually needs a starter for a manual trans not an auto, even though it is an automatic. (go figure--it's a Ford). Assuming they get this sorted, I am wondering what to do if they hit me with a bill for labor. The original reman starter was defective, so that is one thing. But the diagnosis has taken some time.
I don't think I should have to pay for the repair twice, so would like to have some kind of response figured out if they hit me with a bill. When they have made an error in the past they have been fine, but I like to be prepared.
Any and all thots are appreciated. I probably have to be reasonable...this is a small town and I don't like the other shop in town.
Thanks all,
Noel
