Rats are not nice critters, but that's no reason to off them.
If you live in a city I don't know that you have many options, but check with the Board of Health or equvalent and see what they tell you.
If you live in a suburb, you might try a Hav-a-Heart trap, which is a cage the critter can get into and the door closes on them. The you can take them somewhere else and release them. The traps come in different sizes.
That makes them someone else's problem, but you don't have to do the killing. I've done this with smaller rodents--usually chipmunks of which we have waaay too many. My neighbor did a pesky coon this way. Some say the animal usually doesn't survive when moved this way, as they typically wind up in some other critter's territory, but hey, it's the circle of life.
No easy solutions, I think.
OTOH, rats are a far older species that homo sapiens and much more successful. They'll be around long after our cities are crumbling and our Saabs have biodegraded back into the earth. (Is that left and liberal enough for you!?)
Good luck!
Noel
