Agreed. I think it is an outmoded custom that should be done away with. I like the way it is in much of Europe, where the tip is included. It used to be universal, but doesn't seem to be so now. And I've found some waitstaff there, knowing you are American, will lie and tell you "service" is not included.

That said, I tend to do the "traditional" 15% or so, more if the service was good. My kids always urge me to tip if the server is especially good--but even then it is split with the barkeeper, the busboy, etc., so there is no real reward for the server.

You don't tip at fast food places. You don't tip at the hardware store or Home Depot and the service you get there can be worth a whole lot more than somebody bringing you your food. Do you tip flight attendants? All they are is food servers (unless there is trouble).

Now if you go to an event where there is open bar, do you tip there? It seems like plenty of people do. But the waitstaff serving food at the same function don't get tipped.
